Quick Knockout Blacks

Stop selected black text from overprinting -- the easy way

Black text always overprints objects underneath it by default. But in some instances, such as a black headline overprinting an image, this may cause undesirable printed results with the underlying inks showing through.

A quick and reliable way to force selected black text to knock out objects underneath, without altering document-wide trapping or whole-object attributes, is to duplicate the ‘Black' swatch in the Swatches palette.

You can do this simply by dragging and dropping the ‘Black' swatch onto the New Swatch button. Any selected text you apply this ‘Black copy' swatch to will automatically knock out instead of overprint.
