The Nottingham-based studio sepcialising in design and art direction with an impressive client base.
Founded in 2002, Nottingham’s Studio Output is exactly the kind of design business which is setting the pace in the UK today . With a true multi-disciplinary approach, Studio Output tries its hand at everything from visual identity work, to campaign design to large format graphics for interiors and point of sale – and its an approach which seems to be winning the company lots of admirers, including big name clients such as the BBC, for whom Studio Output has designed successive each catching campaigns to promote its Radio One in Ibiza season.
For Studio Output founder and creative director Rob Coke, keeping such high profile clients happy while continuing to develop the graphic design look that has earned the company its reputation is a full time job – but one which runs smoothly through the use of Adobe’s creative software – mostly Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat.
So how do the team at Studio Output usually approach a job and how does Adobe software help?
“Even our moodboards are put together to a standard template in InDesign,” Coke says. “Sometimes we will rough out the bare bones of a layout or imposition guide and use this as a kind of storyboard to doodle into. We try and encourage designers to put pen to paper before developing work on the Mac, as it helps clients to concentrate on the ideas rather than just style. Then we create all of the work using a combination of Illustrator, Freehand InDesign and Photoshop,” he says.
Coke adds that Adobe software is also useful for the times when clients need changes made to a piece of design
“The most difficult thing is for clients to visualise what we're planning to do, particularly if it's a complex illustration that's being created as a lot of work needs to go into them before there's something for the client to see,” Coke says. “ Fortunately, working with Illustrator or Photoshop means we can keep all of the elements editable in case changes have to be made,” he says.
Most recently, the company has developed more fantastic looking artwork for BBC Radio One’s Ibiza 2007 coverage – another Adobe-propelled project of which the company is rightly proud. .
“We've created Radio One's Ibiza campaigns for the last few years now. We produce vector illustrations in Illustrator, with a highly stylised feel that is reinforced by heavy line-work, and a rich, bright colour-palette underpinned by a warm gradient background. The various flyers, posters, ads and banners were then laid out in InDesign before being supplied as print-quality PDFs,” he says.
From Ibiza to Nottingham – Studio Output is firing all on cylinders.
